Can anyone tell me if Farallon's Phonenet talk is compatible with the
3Com Etherlink III card. I am trying to test it but get an 'unable to
find base address, please reset the jumpers' error message. Changing
addresses has not been successful. I am using version 2.04 - so perhaps
there is a more recent one?
thanks for your help

Yea, take the motherboard out ansd throw it away. The buy a 386 or 486
motherboard and install it in the case. Since the 'case' is still the
same it will be the 'same' computer, but now a 386 or 486.

Subject: Compaq 8086 & Tape drive
Would anyone know who manufactured the tape drives for Compaq around
1986. I have a DC1000 tape with information I would like to retrieve
but do not have access to a Compaq Deskpro (8086) or the tape software
used to back it up with. The software (TAPE.EXE) came with Compaq DOS
3.0 or 3.1. The DC1000 tape seems to work ok in a Colorado drive, but
the software (Colorado or PC Tools backup) will not recognize the
format on the tape. Any ideas or suggestions will be much appreciated.
Thanks, Peter.

There are actually two variations; IBM's AT bus specification which
came out with the AT in 1984, and everyone else's clone of it some time
afterwards. Similar but not quite the same. It is 16-bit but the
actual bus speed depends on who built the system board. Most are at
8-8.33 MHz.

EISA is popular outside the network crowd? Not a lot of expansion
cards available for this one. Also hideously expensive. You forgot to
mention that EISA, though being a 32-bit implementation, also inherits
some of the defects of the earlier AT-bus. Don't mix and match 8, 16,
and 32-bit cards because you lose all the advantages EISA offers.

Probably right.

Actually, it's used in the RS/600 workstations, some miniframe systems
(some of the small mainframes too I think) as well as in computers from
NCR and a handful of other manufacturers. I can bandy about the
relative merits/disadvantages of MCA versus the others (I personally
like and use MCA computers) but the statement about cards being
available only from Big Blue is erroneous. There aren't as many
available as there are for the AT-bus but many 3rd party manufacturers
offer them. The trick is to find one that suits your needs exactly.

When you say "future", are you referring to the local bus concept in
general, VESA's VLB or in Intel's PCI?. VESA local bus systems are
already common here; local bus cards on the other hand, are not.

What about waiting a bit for DOS 6.0, due out at the end of March. It
has Stacker-like compression built in.

A few days ago I put a note here asking for experiences with this
company. Disregarding the many typos in their ads, their machines seem
to be a good combination of price and features, besides the fact
they've been in business for quite a while.
The three responses I got were consistent--stay away from Standard
Computer. The problems ranged from defective hardware (although one
reported no problems whatsoever) to shipping wrong equipment. Thanks
to all who responded.

Hi,
Anyone know if an IBM P.C. can access teletext (broadcast data as part

I would love to hear of any experiments in this area or if it is indeed
possible.

Can anyone tell me what SHARE.EXE does? Also, has anyone experienced
problems with using a program written in Clipper when SHARE is in

The Microsoft line of products automatically loads SHARE in the
autoexec.bat; however, this causes problems with our Clipper programs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Subject: windows 3.1 will not install
I had a similar problem, but with reading disks. Try loading all the
discs into a temporary directory. Then install windows from that
directory.
The problem I had is interesting because I think it is a software
hardware interaction. From DOS I could read a disk, do anything with
it, etc. etc. but as soon as I made a mistake, or changed discs, the
system would hang with the drive light on, as yours did.
However, using the file manager in Windows 3.1, I could change disks
without any problem. But, when I attempted to read the drive without a
disk, it would hang again.
I tried different boards, cables, etc, and am left with only the
mother-board to check out. Because I am not crippled by it, and the
problem looks interesting, I have lived with it to tackle later.
